LCL vs FCL Calculator
Compare the cost of shipping less than a container load against booking a full container, and see the exact volume where FCL becomes cheaper.
Formula
Break-even CBM = FCL all-in cost / LCL rate per CBM
Frequently asked questions
When does FCL become cheaper than LCL?
Once your cargo volume multiplied by the LCL rate per CBM exceeds the all-in cost of a full container. For many lanes this break-even point sits between 12 and 20 CBM for a 20ft container.
Should I only compare the freight rate?
No. LCL shipments usually carry higher destination charges, such as CFS handling and documentation fees, so compare the total landed cost rather than the freight line alone.
Is FCL faster than LCL?
Usually yes. LCL cargo must be consolidated and deconsolidated at both ends, which adds several days at each side of the move.
