What is NMFC freight class?
Freight class is an 18-level standard used in US less-than-truckload shipping, from class 50 for the densest cargo to class 500 for the lightest. It determines your freight rate.
How is freight class determined?
Density is the primary factor, but the NMFC also considers stowability, handling difficulty, liability and value. Higher class numbers mean higher rates per pound.
Can a carrier change my freight class after I book?
Yes. If the actual shipment differs from the description, the carrier can reclassify it and bill the difference. Measuring accurately and packing densely reduces that risk.
What density gives me class 50?
Class 50 applies to cargo with a density of 50 pounds per cubic foot or greater, which is the cheapest class to ship.
