Frequently asked questions

What is landed cost?

Landed cost is the true total cost of getting goods to your warehouse: purchase price plus freight, insurance, duty, taxes and every handling charge along the way.

Is duty calculated on FOB or CIF value?

Most customs authorities assess duty on the CIF value, which includes freight and insurance. Some assess on FOB. Check the rule for your destination country before you quote.

Is VAT charged on top of duty?

In most jurisdictions yes. VAT is normally assessed on the customs value plus the duty amount, which is why import VAT can be higher than the duty itself.

Why does landed cost matter more than unit price?

Because a supplier offering a lower FOB price on different Incoterms can end up more expensive once you add freight and clearance costs. Landed cost is the only fair comparison.
